How to refer
Seen’s referral channel opens with clinical intake. Until then, patients can begin directly at seen.org.au — your referral letter, given to the patient, gives their clinician the history from day one. Practices can register for referral-channel updates at seen.org.au/referral.
A named referral is not required — “Dear Psychiatrist” is fine. Please include your provider number.
What should the referral include?
- 1Relevant medical and mental-health history
- 2Current and past medications
- 3Family history of physical and mental-health conditions, where known
- 4Recent observations: blood pressure, pulse and weight
- 5Your provider number and practice details
- 6Reason for referral, including current symptoms
- 7Any personal or family history of heart conditions
What tests are helpful to include?
These are commonly requested before stimulant treatment can be considered — performing them proactively avoids treatment delays:
Blood pressure, pulse and weight
Recent baseline observations.
ECG
Baseline cardiac screen before stimulant treatment is considered.
Bloods
FBC, EUC, LFT, TFT, B12/folate and iron studies.
Recent results are useful — tests completed within the last three months generally don’t need repeating. Your patient’s Seen clinician will confirm exactly what applies.
FAQs for referrers
Who is a good candidate for Seen?
Adults (18+) seeking ADHD assessment, treatment or transfer of existing care. Seen suits patients without complex psychiatric comorbidity; where a patient needs a higher level of psychiatric care or crisis support, we say so and help point to a better pathway.
Are the membership fees Medicare-rebatable?
No — membership fees do not attract Medicare rebates. Rebates may be available for some eligible services depending on the service, clinician, referral and the patient’s circumstances.
Do you offer item 291 assessments?
Not currently.
What happens if the patient does not have ADHD?
We discuss the outcome and next steps with the patient, and with their consent write to you with findings and recommendations. Where ongoing care through Seen is not clinically appropriate, we cancel the patient’s future membership fees — nobody is left paying for care our own clinicians have said is not right for them.
What is communicated back to GPs, and when?
Shared care is the model: with patient consent, you can expect communication after the initial assessment and at key changes — diagnoses, medication changes, monitoring required, planned care, and any requests of you.
Are all appointments with a psychiatrist?
No. Seen runs a collaborative care model: registered psychologists lead the structured assessment, psychiatrists confirm diagnosis and oversee treatment where clinically appropriate, and ongoing care is coordinated across the team in shared care with you.
How do patients attend appointments?
By secure video from home, on any modern browser — camera, microphone and a reliable connection are all that is needed. There is no in-person location.
